What counts as a dental emergency

Some dental issues can wait a few days. Others need attention right away. Call us if you're dealing with any of the following:

  • Severe or persistent tooth pain
  • A knocked-out tooth
  • A cracked, chipped, or broken tooth that hurts or has jagged edges
  • A lost filling or crown
  • Swelling in your face, jaw, or gums
  • Signs of infection like fever, pus, or a bad taste in your mouth
  • Bleeding that won't stop after pressure
  • An injury to your lip, tongue, or cheek
  • An object stuck between your teeth that won't come out with floss

If you're not sure whether what you're feeling is an emergency, call anyway. We'd rather hear from you and tell you it can wait than have you sit on something that shouldn't.

Before you get to the office

A few things you can do to make yourself more comfortable on the way in:

  • 01

For pain or swelling, take an over-the-counter pain reliever you've taken before, and use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek.

  • 02

For a knocked-out tooth, try to find it, rinse it gently in cool water (don't scrub), and either place it back in the socket or keep it in milk on your way to the office. Time matters here, so call as soon as you can.

  • 03

For a broken tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water and save any pieces if you can.

  • 04

For a lost filling or crown, keep the area clean and avoid chewing on that side.

  • 05

For bleeding, apply gentle pressure with clean gauze or a damp tea bag.

When you arrive

We won't make you wait through small talk and paperwork while you're in pain. The front desk will get you back to a chair as quickly as possible. Your dentist will take a look, figure out what's going on, and walk you through your options before doing anything.

You'll also have access to our comfort menu we use for every appointment. Emergencies are stressful, but your visit doesn't have to be.

After hours and weekends

If you reach us during business hours, we'll do our best to see you the same day. After hours, call the location closest to you and follow the prompts on the voicemail for emergency guidance.

If your situation is life-threatening, including uncontrollable bleeding, difficulty breathing, or a serious facial injury, go to the nearest emergency room first.

“From the moment I called, I was treated so kindly. Heather set me up with a new patient visit right away and on a Saturday! Danika at the front desk was so friendly and gave me a wonderful tour! My dental hygienist, Meiber, was very gentle with my teeth, and the dentist, Dr. Shedd, gave me positive feedback! Very grateful I made the switch; thank you all!”

“Wow! I am impressed. When I first arrived, I was given a really nice gift and given a tour around the office. Short wait for my appointment. Knowledgeable staff. Amazingly comfortable seats with warming and massage options. A lot of comfort options for people with dental anxiety. They were super sweet to my 3-year-old, who tagged along with me as well.”

FAQ

Things you might be wondering

It depends on what's going on. Severe pain, knocked-out teeth, swelling, and signs of infection should be seen as soon as possible. A small chip with no pain or mild sensitivity can usually wait a day or two. When in doubt, call us and we'll help you decide.
That's okay. We see emergency patients whether you're new to us or have been coming for years. Call us, and we'll get you in as quickly as we can.
For most dental issues, no. Emergency rooms aren't usually staffed with dentists, and they can typically only manage pain or address infection short-term, not actually fix the tooth. Call us first. The exception is anything life-threatening, like uncontrolled bleeding, difficulty breathing, or a serious facial injury, in which case go to the ER right away.
It depends on what you need. We'll always walk you through the cost before any treatment begins, and we accept most major insurance plans plus financing through CareCredit. If you don't have insurance, ask about our In-Office Savings Plan.
