Dental visits don't have to feel like something you dread

For some people, the dentist is just an appointment. For others, even the thought of sitting in the chair triggers real anxiety, racing thoughts, sweaty palms, the works. That's okay. And it's a lot more common than you might think.

If you've been putting off dental work because of fear, a strong gag reflex, a tough past experience, or a long procedure ahead of you, sedation can help. At both our Milford and Henniker offices, our sedation dentists offer options that take the edge off, so your visit feels calm, safe, and short.

When sedation makes sense

Sedation isn't just for people who are afraid of the dentist. Plenty of patients use it for very practical reasons:

  • You feel anxious in the chair, no matter how friendly the team is
  • You have a strong gag reflex that makes longer procedures difficult
  • You have trouble sitting still through a long appointment
  • You're scheduled for a complex procedure like an implant placement
  • You have sensitive teeth or trouble getting numb with anesthesia alone
  • You've avoided the dentist for years and want to catch up in fewer visits

If any of those sound like you, sedation is worth talking about.

Your sedation options

As your sedation dentists in Milford and Henniker, we offer multiple ways to keep you comfortable. The right option depends on the procedure, your medical history, and how anxious you're feeling.

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)

The lightest form of sedation we offer. You breathe in a mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a small mask, and within a few minutes, you feel relaxed. The effects wear off quickly once we remove the mask, which means you can drive home and go about your day. Nitrous is safe for both kids and adults, and it's a great fit for patients with mild to moderate anxiety.

Additional sedation options

For patients who need more support than nitrous oxide can provide, our team offers additional sedation options. The best fit depends on your procedure and your medical history. Call us to talk through which option makes the most sense for your situation.

Safe, supervised, and tailored to you

Whatever option you choose, you're in good hands. Sedation dentistry is one of the most regulated areas of dental care, and our team has the training and experience to keep you safe from the moment you sit down to the moment you leave.

We'll go over your medical history before any sedation visit, monitor you throughout the procedure, and make sure you have someone to drive you home if you need it. You'll never be left alone in the chair.

“From the moment I called, I was treated so kindly. Heather set me up with a new patient visit right away and on a Saturday! Danika at the front desk was so friendly and gave me a wonderful tour! My dental hygienist, Meiber, was very gentle with my teeth, and the dentist, Dr. Shedd, gave me positive feedback! Very grateful I made the switch; thank you all!”

“Wow! I am impressed. When I first arrived, I was given a really nice gift and given a tour around the office. Short wait for my appointment. Knowledgeable staff. Amazingly comfortable seats with warming and massage options. A lot of comfort options for people with dental anxiety. They were super sweet to my 3-year-old, who tagged along with me as well.”

FAQ

Things you might be wondering

Depends on the type. With nitrous oxide, you'll be relaxed and a little floaty but fully awake and able to respond. With deeper sedation options, you may feel like you've slept through your appointment, even though you weren't fully unconscious. Talk with us about which level is right for you.
Yes. Sedation dentistry is highly regulated, and our team is trained to use it. We review your medical history before any sedation appointment, monitor you closely throughout your visit, and stay with you until the effects wear off.
It depends on the type of sedation you receive. Nitrous oxide wears off within a few minutes, so you'll be fine to drive yourself. For deeper sedation options, you'll need someone to drive you home, and we'll let you know ahead of your appointment so you can plan.
Some plans cover sedation, especially when it's medically necessary. Most don't cover routine use for anxiety alone. We'll help you understand what your plan covers before your appointment, and we can walk you through financing options if needed.
